Book Week 2016

Book Week 2016

Book fever swept through St. Joseph’s N.S. during our recent Book Week. We had a very enjoyable celebration of books and stories and children enjoyed many book related activities throughout the week. Activities included DEAR time every day where everyone had to Drop Everything And Read. All classes took part in a quiz suitable to their class level and the very high scores in the quizzes showed that our children know a lot about books and stories. We got super entries for the poster competition, well done to everyone who entered. Posters will be displayed in the school library throughout the year. Teachers and children read stories written by the well-known authors; Julia Donaldson (Junior Infants), Jill Murphy (Senior Infants), Martin Waddell (1st Class) and Michael Morpurgo (2nd Class). Children took part in some extreme reading, check out the photos of all the interesting places they read in! 2nd class children enjoyed a visit from Caroline Barry, who did a creative writing workshop with them. Our budding authors got lots of inspiration for creating characters and settings for when they are writing their own stories. Some classes visited the town library for Halloween stories. The highlight of our celebration of books and stories for our Junior & Senior Infant children was the Pyjama Party. Junior & Senior Infant children came back to school at 6:30pm in their pyjamas and with their favourite teddybear to enjoy bedtime stories with their parents. They were also treated to hot chocolate and a gingerbread man (sincere thanks to Bradbury’s, parents, TY students and teachers who made the evening a special and memorable one for everyone.)

The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
