The green school have been very busy this term!

The weather has been glorious and has given us lots of opportunities to explore some outdoor learning. We have been tidying, weeding, watering, planting, sowing and digging. Volunteers from the parents association came to help us sow some new vegetables. We planted potatoes, beetroot, carrots, peas, lettuce, scallion and broad beans, just to name a few! Keep an eye out for some peas sprouting at the mounds outside Athas. We planted wildflower seeds around the trees in the field. We are so excited to see them bloom next year! Our secret garden also got a makeover! 2nd class participated in Incredible Edibles this year and planted their fruit and vegetables in the secret garden. We already can’t wait to feast on the delicious produce!

We have carried out many litter picks around our school. This helps keep our school tidy and keep our animals safe. We know how important it is to put our litter in the bin.

Our next green flag is Global Citizenship Travel. We are becoming more aware of environmentally friendly modes of transport. The sustainable travel colouring competition highlighted all the different options we have available to us when we travel to school. The competition showed just how talented and creative the children in St Joseph’s are! The Parents Association very kindly sponsored vouchers and scooters for the winners!

The Green School Committee gathered the findings from the travel survey. This survey looked at ways children traveled to school. The car was the most used mode of transport to school. We will try to carpool or park and stride instead. We use our bikes and scooters as much as we can because we know they keep us fit while being kind to the environment!

1st and 2nd class participated in scooter training. They are very proficient scooter riders now! Laura from An Taisce came to teach us how to use a scooter correctly. This is a vital skill and one which the children and the environment will benefit greatly from.
